Dr. William Bensinger received his medical degree at Northwestern University, Chicago, and interned at Washington University, St. Louis. He worked at the National Cancer Institute in the field of cancer virology before moving to the University of Washington for completion of his internal medicine residency and subspecialty training in medical oncology. Dr. Bensinger is director of the Autologous Stem Cell Transplant Program at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, which has a worldwide reputation in the field of cancer therapy and stem cell transplantation. He is also professor of medicine at the University of Washington.

Dr. Bensinger is a member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) myeloma guidelines committee and co-chair of the NCCN cancer-related infection guidelines committee. He is also a member of the International Myeloma Working Group clinical endpoints committee. Dr. Bensinger has published more than 200 articles in refereed journals, books, and monographs in the field of stem cell transplantation on the subjects of mobilization, collection, and transplantation of autologous and allogeneic stem cells, especially as it relates to the treatment of multiple myeloma. Other publications include the use of CD34 selected stem cells and innovative transplant regimens. In addition, Dr. Bensinger holds several patents including one as a co-inventor of the avidin-biotin bead selection system.
